Leading travel technology provider Amadeus has released new findings from its independent global study, Innovating the Culture of Tomorrow. The research explores the evolving priorities of technology professionals across eight international markets and sheds light on the critical factors influencing career decisions in the tech industry.
Career Change is Inevitable for Tech Professionals
According to the study, a significant 94% of tech professionals expect to change careers in the future to adapt to emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and cloud computing. In fact, 40% of global tech professionals foresee making at least three career changes throughout their careers, ensuring they remain at the forefront of industry developments. The report also found that 24% of respondents believe their current employer underinvests in training, a key reason for job dissatisfaction. The lack of training on new technologies was identified as a critical factor for nearly half (48%) of tech professionals considering moving to other companies.
Innovation Above All Else
Innovation, more than salary, is the driving force behind tech professionals’ job satisfaction. 43% of those working at innovative companies reported being ‘very happy’ at work, compared to just 8% at non-innovative companies. When selecting potential employers, the study found that being part of an innovative company is ranked higher than salary by tech professionals. In fact, professionals are willing to sacrifice up to 21% of their pay to work for a leading innovator in their sector. According to Professor James Berry, founder of the UCL MBA, working at a company seen as innovative offers tech professionals both career advancement and job security. He stresses the importance for companies to clearly communicate their innovation achievements and ensure investment in employee training to attract and retain top tech talent.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I) Are Top Priorities
For 79% of tech professionals, a company’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I) credentials are a key factor when choosing an employer. Notably, AI engineers (53%) place even greater emphasis on DE&I, highlighting its importance in tech roles amidst growing concerns over biases in AI models. This finding underlines the importance of organisations demonstrating their commitment to inclusive practices and creating equitable opportunities within their teams.
Collaboration Over Recreation
The study also revealed that traditional office perks like ping-pong tables and recreational spaces are no longer considered essential to fostering innovation. Instead, tech professionals favour improved technology, suitable workspaces, quiet areas, and meeting facilities that facilitate collaboration and brainstorming. About 56% of respondents rated the availability of cutting-edge technology as the most valuable aspect in promoting workplace innovation.
Mental Health and Psychological Safety Remain a Concern
Despite the growing emphasis on innovation, around 18% of tech professionals feel their work environment does not encourage innovation, and 11% believe they are not supported in experimenting with their ideas. Additionally, 17% of tech workers feel uncomfortable discussing their mental health at work, indicating a significant gap in providing psychological safety and support.
