Yoniq Portal Dual-Screen Handheld Gets a Countdown, But Questions Remain

The Yoniq Portal dual-screen handheld now has a name, at least according to Notebookcheck, and a countdown timer that ends on 31st December 2026, pointing to a possible launch date of 1st January 2027. Whether either of those things is real is a rather different question.

The device surfaced publicly when Yoniq began emailing journalists ahead of Gamescom, inviting press to visit their booth in Cologne on 26th August. The company promised an official unveiling on that date. As of the time of writing, however, no real in-person photographs have appeared, no social media posts have surfaced from Gamescom attendees, and no footage of a physical unit exists in the wild.

What We Know About the Yoniq Portal Dual-Screen Handheld

Notebookcheck has reported that the device carries the name Yoniq Portal, and describes a form factor featuring an angled display directed towards the user, with a charging port at the bottom. That physical description is more than Yoniq itself has been willing to confirm publicly: the company told journalists that the final product name is still being finalised, and their website had previously listed the device as the Yoniq Duo before quietly removing that name entirely.

‘Our website is still being prepared, and a few details, including the final product name, are still being finalised. We will officially unveil the product at Gamescom in Cologne on August 26, and everything will be confirmed by then,’ a Yoniq representative stated. It is now past that date, and confirmation has yet to materialise in any traceable public form.

The website itself has been going on and offline regularly, with small changes appearing almost daily. The latest update introduced a countdown timer accompanied by the phrase ‘the next way to play is almost here’, with the counter running down to 31st December 2026. The implied launch window of 1st January 2027 looks suspiciously like a placeholder, and given the pattern of constant edits and the absence of any concrete hardware evidence, that suspicion is difficult to dismiss.

A Big Jump From a Silicon Gamepad

What makes the Yoniq Portal dual-screen handheld a harder sell to believe in is where Yoniq is coming from as a company. Their existing product is a silicon gamepad, something that is cheap to manufacture and low-risk to develop. A dual-screen portable console is an entirely different proposition: it requires significant investment, component sourcing, firmware development, and meaningful community support before it can reach production in any credible form.

Adding to the scepticism, Yoniq has no official presence on the Gamescom exhibitor listings that journalists have been able to find, and their promotional material consists entirely of AI-generated imagery. There is not a single real photograph of the device. When journalists requested images and further specifications, Yoniq responded that no information would be shared until ‘after Gamescom’.

The company did offer one commitment: ‘Once our product is officially launched, we will send you a sample at the earliest opportunity so that you can be one of the first to experience it.’ Whether that opportunity arrives depends entirely on whether the hardware ever moves beyond render images and countdown timers.

It is worth holding space for the possibility that this is simply a very early-stage product being tested for market interest before any serious development begins, which is a legitimate enough approach, even if the Gamescom framing oversells the device’s readiness. The dual-screen portable space could certainly use more entrants. The ANBERNIC RG DS currently sits as the main reference point in this niche, and the suggestion of a built-in stylus is the sort of feature that DS-era portable fans would genuinely welcome. More information is expected from Yoniq after Gamescom concludes, at which point the picture, real or otherwise, should become somewhat clearer.
