The Minish Cap 3DS port is here, and The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap now runs natively on Nintendo’s clamshell handheld with full dual-screen support and true widescreen gameplay on the top display. If your 3DS has been gathering dust in a drawer, this is a reasonable excuse to dig it back out.
Where the Minish Cap 3DS Port Comes From
The project draws on three separate open-source foundations. The base is zeldaret/tmc, the open-source decompilation of the original game. On top of that sits Project Picori, described as the native Minish Cap engine and port infrastructure, and the dual-screen work builds on samyost/tmc-android, the Android source base that first extended the game to a second display.
The port was developed with the involvement of OpenAI’s Codex programme, which the original write-up flags openly. That will sit uneasily with some corners of the retro-gaming community, and fairly so. What partially offsets the concern is the contributor count: 46 human contributors are listed on the project, which puts it well beyond what anyone could reasonably call a fully automated exercise.
No game files are bundled with the release. As with other recompilation projects of this kind, you will need to supply your own legally acquired ROM, either from the European or US release of the GBA original, before anything runs. The GitHub page makes that requirement clear from the outset.
What the Dual-Screen Layout Actually Does
The top screen handles gameplay in true widescreen, with Original and Stretch display modes available depending on your preference. The bottom touchscreen is where the dual-screen design earns its place: it carries a live map, dungeon information, quest status, touch-based item controls, and settings, all available without interrupting play. For anyone who has navigated Minish Cap’s item menus on original GBA hardware, having that information persistent on a second screen changes the feel of the game considerably.
There is no stereoscopic 3D mode, but the port does not ignore the 3DS hardware otherwise. An 804 MHz mode, L2 cache, multi-core rendering, and optional 2x to 5x turbo via the C-Stick are all supported. Display parameters including Blur, Bilinear, Ultra Sharp, and Pixel Perfect can be adjusted to taste.
Randomizer, Audio and Save Handling
Project Picori’s randomizer is built directly into the port, with separate save slots for a standard playthrough and a randomized run kept cleanly apart. That is a thoughtful inclusion for a game whose item progression lends itself well to randomization.
On the audio side, the port delivers native stereo sound, which is more than the original GBA hardware could offer. Save handling is described as reliable, settings persist between sessions, and FPS tools alongside diagnostic dumps are available for anyone who runs into issues and wants to file a useful bug report.
The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap was originally developed for the Game Boy Advance and remains one of the more compact and precisely designed entries in the Zelda series. Playing it on a Nintendo 3DS, with its larger screens, stereo speakers, and that persistent bottom-screen map, is a genuinely different experience from the original. The widescreen top display gives the game room it never had on a 32-bit handheld, and the touch controls on the lower screen reduce the menu interruptions that were an accepted part of GBA-era play.
