Germany has challenged Türkiye’s application to the European Commission to have döner kebab recognised as a traditional product in the EU. To counter these objections, Bereket Döner, a leading Turkish culinary brand, has presented an academic study defending döner’s historical and cultural significance.
Speaking at a press conference in Istanbul on 5th December, Bereket Döner highlighted research that establishes the Turkish origins of döner kebab, offering substantial historical evidence to bolster Türkiye’s claim.
“Our research demonstrates that döner is deeply rooted in Turkish history and culture,” said Mevlüt Ceyhun Tekdemir, Vice Chairman of Bereket Döner’s Board. “From Takiyeddin Efendi’s 16th-century mechanical drawings to insights from Evliya Çelebi, our evidence leaves no doubt about döner’s origins. We trust the European Commission to recognise this heritage appropriately.”
The study, Türkiye’s World-Famous Delicacy: Döner, incorporates engravings, historical documents, and artefacts tracing the dish’s origins to the Ottoman era. The report underscores döner’s role as a cultural icon that fosters connections between Turkish and European communities.
Uniting Cultures Through Cuisine
“Döner is not about division; it’s about unity,” Tekdemir remarked. “It’s a culinary tradition that brings people together, blending cultures and tastes in a unique way.”
Bereket Döner also revealed plans to expand its Döner Point franchise across Europe, beginning with Germany. The company’s strategy includes introducing authentic Turkish döner to more European cities and solidifying its position as a global brand.
“We’re excited to bring the true taste of Turkish döner to Europe,” said Tekdemir. “Our expansion strategy reflects our commitment to preserving and sharing this cultural treasure with the world.”
Through its initiatives, Bereket Döner aims to honour and protect the heritage of Turkish döner while promoting its importance as a culinary and cultural asset.
