London-based autonomous vehicle software company, Wayve, has received a significant investment from global taxi giant Uber, as the two companies sign a strategic partnership. This new investment aims to further advance Wayve’s cutting-edge self-driving technology, with the ultimate goal of integrating fully autonomous vehicles into Uber’s global taxi network.

The collaboration marks a major milestone for Wayve, as the company prepares to enhance its AI capabilities and expand its presence within the autonomous vehicle (AV) market. “Partnering with Uber, the largest mobility network in the world, allows us to significantly scale up our AI’s fleet learning,” said Alex Kendall, co-founder and CEO of Wayve. “This partnership ensures our autonomous driving technology will be safe, reliable, and ready for deployment across Uber’s vast global network.”

Uber’s Strategic Move in the AV Space

The San Francisco-based ride-hailing company’s investment builds on Wayve’s $1.05 billion Series C funding round, which took place in May 2024. Other notable backers in that round included prominent names such as SoftBank, Nvidia, and Microsoft, further demonstrating the growing interest in Wayve’s revolutionary AI technology.

Wayve’s innovative approach, known as ‘Embodied AI’, has garnered attention for its potential to accelerate the development of autonomous driving systems. Rather than relying solely on pre-programmed rules, Wayve’s AI system learns from its environment, improving its decision-making in real-time. This dynamic and adaptive method is seen as crucial for bringing safe and reliable self-driving technology to the masses.

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi commented on the partnership, saying, “Wayve’s advanced Embodied AI approach holds immense promise as we work toward a future where vehicles are shared, electric, and autonomous. We are excited to have Wayve as a key partner in our journey to make Uber the premier network for autonomous vehicles.”

What This Partnership Means for the Future of Mobility

The partnership between Wayve and Uber marks a pivotal moment for both companies and the future of autonomous transportation. Uber has long sought to establish itself as a leader in the AV space, and this collaboration with Wayve strengthens its position in the race to deploy self-driving taxis. Wayve, meanwhile, gains a powerful ally in Uber, allowing it to leverage Uber’s vast global network to test, refine, and scale its technology.

The collaboration also opens up opportunities for Wayve to work with automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to bring its technology to market faster. As Alex Kendall mentioned, “Working with Uber and OEMs allows us to push the boundaries of autonomous driving technology, bringing it to consumers sooner than we ever thought possible.”

With Uber’s investment and support, Wayve is well-positioned to become a major player in the autonomous vehicle industry, contributing to a future where self-driving taxis could become a common sight on roads across the world.
