Pokémon CC Operation Masquerade fuses Arknights and GBA Emerald in one ROM hack

Pokémon CC: Operation Masquerade is a GBA ROM hack that places the Arknights Contingency Contract mode inside the Pokémon Emerald engine, and the result is unlike anything else in the fan-game scene right now. Built by the team of Turtleye, hedara, and Pawkkie, it takes the familiar Gen III framework and pushes it somewhere genuinely different.

What Pokémon CC Operation Masquerade actually is

The setup follows a character named Tiana, who enters a convention with a small roster of Pokémon and must fight through gauntlets of trainers in increasingly tense battles. That convention setting gives the whole thing a personality you do not get from a standard region-hopping adventure. You set battle modifiers before each encounter, customise your team to chase high scores, and spend credits either at the gacha or wandering the convention floor in a way that the creators themselves describe as satisfying a gambling itch in much the same way Arknights does.

Speaking of the gacha: it is not window dressing. Credits you earn in battle can be wagered to pull new items and Pokémon, which ties directly back to the mechanics of the mobile game the hack is drawing from. Turtleye, hedara, and Pawkkie describe it as a ‘gacha system for all your gambling needs’, and it is clearly baked into the core loop rather than bolted on.

The trio also note there is ‘an unholy amount of scripting for the size of the map’, which goes some way to explaining how much has been crammed into a convention-sized setting. Every element of the overworld, the menu screens, and the battle interface has been drawn from scratch, giving Operation Masquerade a look that immediately signals it is not a reskin. You know within moments of loading it up that something considerably more considered is going on.

The Emerald engine underneath and how to get playing

According to Remakit, the hack is built on jorts’ Emerald engine, which provides the GBA foundation that Turtleye, hedara, and Pawkkie have then layered the Contingency Contract mechanics on top of. Using a proven engine base means the classic Pokémon battle feel is preserved underneath all the new scripting, even as the format around it has been substantially reworked.

The current release, as catalogued by Trendshift, is v1.0.3, so the team has already been iterating since the initial launch. That version number is a reassuring sign for anyone picking this up now: it suggests active maintenance and at least a few rounds of fixes already behind it.

To play, you will need a legally acquired ROM of Pokémon Emerald. Once you have that, head to Hackdex to download the patch, apply it to your ROM using a standard GBA patching tool, and you are away. The process is no different from patching any other GBA hack, so if you have done this before with Fire Red or Emerald hacks, you will know exactly what to do.

What makes Operation Masquerade worth the effort is precisely that combination of a deeply familiar engine and a format that throws out every assumption you carry in from playing the mainline games. The Contingency Contract mode in Arknights rewards min-maxing and score-chasing in a way Pokémon’s main series never really has. Seeing that philosophy land inside a GBA cartridge-style experience, complete with hand-drawn menus and a gacha reel, is the kind of fan creativity that keeps the ROM-hacking scene genuinely worth following. Pokémon CC: Operation Masquerade is already on v1.0.3, and it shows.
