The MagicX Pocket Dream vertical handheld has moved from rumour to early design reality, with the company sharing initial specs and two distinct layout concepts on Discord as it explores a portrait-orientation device powered by the Rockchip RK3566 and a 3.3-inch OLED display.

MagicX have been moving quickly through the handheld emulator space, releasing their single-screen DS-style device and the One 35 (a machine that ships with two D-pads) before most manufacturers have blinked. The Pocket Dream is the latest concept to emerge from that busy pipeline, and it positions itself as an evolution of the Mini Dream, which MagicX have also confirmed is still heading to market.

From Mini Dream to Pocket Dream: the vertical evolution

The Mini Dream was officially unveiled on 23 July 2026, according to Tech Insider, giving MagicX’s vertical ambitions a clear timeline. The Pocket Dream takes that foundation and reframes it for one-handed use. MagicX describe it as ‘better for one-handed play, ideal for commuting, short sessions, or quick pick-up-and-play moments,’ which is precisely the brief the Game Boy and the WonderSwan answered for their respective eras.

The core hardware spec carries over from the Mini Dream: a 3.3-inch OLED panel, a 3,500mAh battery, and four SoC variants covering both Linux and Android builds, with the Linux version running on the RK3566. The chassis measures 107×72×22mm. MagicX have not confirmed a price, though the combination of that chipset and that battery capacity in their previous devices suggests a figure around $100 or lower.

The Pocket Dream is still firmly in the design stage, and MagicX have been transparent about that, sharing early concepts with the community and inviting feedback rather than presenting a finished product. That openness has shaped the device in visible ways already.

Two designs, four colour schemes, and a community already weighing in

The first layout placed two analogue joysticks just below the screen, with the D-pad below those and the action buttons to the right, an arrangement that drew comparisons to the Powkiddy RGB20S, partly because of a centred button at the base of the unit that gives the device an inadvertent smiley-face look when the bottom light catches it. A GameCube-inspired colour option featured in the initial reveal, and if MagicX can translate that palette cleanly to the final hardware, they will find buyers on aesthetics alone.

After community feedback, a second design arrived with the joystick and D-pad positions swapped, the lower button repositioned upward, and an overall silhouette that sits closer in feel to the Trimui Brick. It reads as cleaner and more professional, though the placement of the joysticks low on the unit will divide opinion depending on how you hold a vertical device.

Four colour schemes are expected, suggested by the Discord tease, and each of the options shown so far has been visually distinct enough to appeal to different corners of the community. Whether the device will be comfortable over extended play is a question that can only be answered once production units exist, but the price point MagicX are aiming for softens the risk considerably.

MagicX have not announced a release window for the Pocket Dream. Further details on finalised design, confirmed specs and pricing are expected to surface on the MagicX Discord and official channels as development progresses, with the Mini Dream set to arrive alongside it.
