Cast your mind back roughly fifteen years. Analogue signals across the UK went dark, and the replacement was a clean, digital multiplex system. A new set-top box, a decent aerial, and you were done. It felt like infrastructure built to last.
And yet here we are, watching that same digital system edge toward its own sunset.

The pattern is familiar enough.

Rural areas, older housing stock, and households on fixed incomes are the spaces where that remaining percentage lives, and a 2035 deadline concentrates the mind on what the support infrastructure around the switch-off actually looks like.
The replacement model being discussed centres on an online delivery service, with a set-top box required at least initially for those without a smart television or streaming device. The logistics of reaching that residual 1.4 million, or wherever the number lands by 2035, will matter rather more than the technology choices.
