The Heart & Soul 2.0 update is now available, delivering a ground-up rebuild of one of the most ambitious Pokémon ROM hacks on the GBA format. According to the Pokémon Heart & Soul official site, the release dropped on 22 August 2026 and has since been updated to v2.0.4, making this already a considerably more refined package than the initial 2.0.0 build that launched the new era of the hack.

Heart & Soul takes Pokémon Emerald as its base ROM and reimagines the Gold & Silver experience on that engine, an idea that sounds straightforward enough until you look at the feature list and realise quite how far the team has taken it. The hack originally launched on 26 September 2025, and lead developer Lil Dill has been building on that foundation ever since.

What the Heart & Soul 2.0 Update Actually Changes

The headline change in this release is a complete rebuild on pokeemerald-expansion, the widely used GitHub-hosted decompilation framework that gives ROM hack developers access to a far richer set of tools than the original engine allowed. That decision alone explains why so much of the 2.0 feature list reads like a different game. Abilities are now implemented up to Generation 9, including Hidden Abilities, and items from up to Gen 9 are present as well, including the Shiny Charm.

The day/night system, the 16 gym leaders, the two safari zones and the following Pokémon feature from the original release are all still here, but 2.0 layers considerably more on top. Surf and Bike music has been restored, with an option to disable it, and a GB Player Key Item lets you toggle Generation 2 music and sounds independently. The full PokéGear Radio is present with all channels from Crystal, plus some additions, and all 92 HeartGold/SoulSilver TMs are in.

Kanto has been overhauled. Maps and tilesets have been rebuilt, rematch trainers are in place, and in-game trades for the region are included. Roaming legendaries have also been substantially reworked: Entei, Raikou and a new Kanto roamer are all independent of one another, and roamers no longer deliberately avoid the player’s route. A sound cue and animation now trigger when you enter the same route as a roamer, which is exactly the kind of quality-of-life touch that makes hunting them feel less like guesswork.

The randomiser now covers all Pokémon from Generations 1 through 9. Kurt’s Berry Balls boost catch rate via custom-defined type affinity where that proves more impactful than the standard boost. Mom’s Savings System is in. Voltorb Flip is in. You can fly to a wider range of routes and Pokémon Centres. The Rocket takeover is now locked behind the 7th badge regardless of the order in which you earn it, tidying up a pacing issue that affected some players’ runs.

AI Assistance: What the Developers Have Said

The team addressed the question of AI involvement directly. Their statement reads: ‘every line of code written for the game is either hand-written or manually reviewed by a member of the team. However, it is still important to point out that LLMs like Claude Code and GitHub Copilot have been used for some tasks, such as reviews of hand-written code, debugging, auto-completion, and creating Python Scripts for I/O procedures. However, it was not used for generating any assets such as art and music.’

That is a reasonable and clear position. Code review and debugging assistance is a long way from handing the whole project to a language model, and the manual review requirement at least means a human eye passes over everything before it ships.

Heart & Soul is distributed by patching your own Pokémon Emerald file, keeping the distribution method on the right side of the legal line. The Pokémon franchise’s official games have never attempted anything quite like this on GBA hardware, which is precisely why a project of this scope has found the audience it has. The current release to seek out is v2.0.4, available via the official site linked above.
