The Socket frontend for Android has gained Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Xbox and Xbox 360 platform support in update 0.3.2, continuing a run of substantial additions to what remains an Alpha release. Socket frontend GB GBC support arrives alongside a batch of new cartridge finishes and a raft of quality-of-life changes that make the app feel increasingly polished for something still locked behind early access.
What Socket Does and Why It Stands Out
Socket is an Android frontend for emulators built around the idea that your ROM library should look as good as the physical collection it represents. Rather than presenting a flat list of titles, it pulls cartridge and disc art automatically and arranges everything by platform. According to the developer’s official site, each platform gets its own unique 3D model complete with original stickers, and those models are fully customisable. The whole thing is clearly designed with the collector’s eye in mind.
The presentation goes further than static visuals, too. Each platform also features custom sounds and a custom insert animation, so sliding a Game Boy cartridge into place feels different from slotting in an Xbox disc. It is a small touch, but exactly the kind of considered detail that separates a frontend built by someone who loves the hardware from one built purely for utility.
Access to the Alpha currently sits behind a Patreon paywall at around $6, which puts the developer, known as depmots, in direct conversation with the community funding the work. Given the pace of updates, that arrangement seems to be producing results.
Socket Frontend GB GBC and Console Additions in 0.3.2
The headline additions in 0.3.2 are the four new platforms. Game Boy and Game Boy Color join the supported list, as do Xbox and Xbox 360, each bringing their own 3D models, sounds, and insert animations in line with the platform’s existing design language. For anyone building out a broad library across generations, these are meaningful additions.
Alongside the platform support, the update introduces five new cartridge finishes: Metallic, Glitter, Opaque, Translucent, and Clear, each available in a wide range of colours. The Material and Foil pickers in the Customise menu have been reworked into dropdowns, and materials have been split into two distinct categories covering the physical material type and the colour separately. That split also enables auto-configuration when scraping, which should reduce the amount of manual setup required when adding new titles to a library.
A new render scale slider has been added under Settings, with a default value of 0.85. A bug that caused a black screen when launching a second game while an emulator such as RetroArch was already running from a previous session has been fixed, along with various quality-of-life improvements not individually specified in the update notes.
Still in Alpha, Still Moving Fast
It is worth keeping perspective on where Socket currently sits in its development cycle. This is Alpha software, and the Patreon model means updates are shaped by a paying community rather than a fixed roadmap. What update 0.3.2 demonstrates is that the pace of development is not slowing. Adding four platforms in a single update, while simultaneously reworking the materials system and expanding the customisation options, is a reasonable amount of work for any stage of development.
The 3D model approach is what makes Socket genuinely different from most Android frontends. Presenting a Game Boy cartridge with its original label geometry, custom shell finish, and a satisfying insert sound each time you select a title is the kind of thing that takes a ROM library from a folder of files into something that actually reflects the affection most collectors have for the hardware itself. Whether depmots can carry that level of craft through to a full release is the real question, but 0.3.2 gives no reason to doubt the intention.
