Pokémon Ruby Sapphire Switch 2 Ports Tipped for Autumn Release Window

Online chatter around Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald Switch 2 ports has grown considerably louder, with a release window as early as September or October of this year now being floated, according to GAMES.GG. Whether these will land as part of Nintendo Switch Online or as stand-alone eShop purchases remains unclear, but the momentum behind the rumour is building.

For those of us who spent serious hours with the Game Boy Advance originals, this is the kind of news that makes you instinctively reach for a cartridge. Ruby and Sapphire launched the third generation of the series, introducing the Hoenn region, double battles, and Pokémon abilities for the first time. Emerald refined the formula further, adding the Battle Frontier and a slightly expanded storyline. All three remain beloved entries, and the GBA hardware they ran on was no slouch either: the 32-bit ARM7TDMI processor driving those games produced visuals and audio that still hold up admirably on a small screen.

Following the Trail Blazed by FireRed and LeafGreen

The context here matters. Nintendo already re-released FireRed and LeafGreen for Switch, and those titles evidently performed well enough to encourage a follow-up push. It stands to reason that Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald would be the natural next step in bringing the GBA Pokémon library to modern hardware. The report of pricing speculation that accompanied the FireRed and LeafGreen releases put individual titles at around £16.99 on the eShop, which is a reasonable benchmark if Nintendo follows the same model here.

The timing would also make commercial sense. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Pokémon series, and The Pokémon Company and Nintendo would be leaving a considerable opportunity on the table if they did not lean into that milestone with catalogue releases. Ruby and Sapphire were themselves a landmark moment in the franchise’s history, representing the leap to the GBA and arriving at a time when the series was expanding in every direction.

Pokémon Ruby Sapphire Switch 2 Release: What Remains Unknown

The key questions remain open. It is not yet confirmed whether Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald would come to Switch 2 as emulated ports via Nintendo Switch Online’s growing library of legacy titles, or whether Nintendo would package them as paid stand-alone releases as it did with the Kanto remakes. Both routes have precedent. The Switch Online approach gives subscribers instant access; the paid model tends to signal a higher degree of polish or added features, though there is no indication either way at this stage.

There is also the question of what gets skipped. Gold and Silver, and their own remakes HeartGold and SoulSilver, have not surfaced in these rumours, which is curious given that the second generation arguably has the most devoted fanbase of any era. One possible explanation doing the rounds is that HeartGold and SoulSilver’s reliance on the Pokéwalker accessory and the original DS dual-screen setup complicates a straightforward port. If Nintendo is quietly developing a second-screen peripheral for the Switch 2, a HeartGold and SoulSilver release could follow at a later date, though that remains squarely in the realm of speculation.

For now, the Hoenn games are what the chatter centres on. A September or October window, if accurate, would mean an announcement cannot be far off, since Nintendo rarely lets a major Pokémon release arrive without a proper promotional campaign. Watch the next Nintendo Direct with that in mind.
