The sequel is being developed by Dragami Games and NADA Holdings, the same partnership behind the 2024 remaster of the original game. It is, by all accounts, the success of that remaster that gave both studios the confidence to push forward with a brand-new title rather than leave Juliet’s cheerleader-meets-zombie-apocalypse world as a one-game curiosity. The series has always had a devoted following, the kind that quotes lines and dresses up at conventions, and the remaster clearly demonstrated that audience had not gone anywhere.
The creative team behind Lollipop Chainsaw 2 Back2Back carries some serious pedigree. According to the PlayAsia Blog, the project involves Masahiro Yuki, the co-producer and writer on the original Lollipop Chainsaw, alongside character designer NekoshowguN, who gave Juliet her distinctive look. Joining them is Hajime Tabata, whose involvement brings an interesting dimension to the sequel’s ambitions. That combination of original series DNA and additional creative input suggests Dragami Games is treating this as a proper continuation rather than a quick follow-up riding the remaster’s coattails.
Getting Hands On the Demo at Tokyo Game Show
The playable demo runs from Thursday 17th until Monday 21st September at the Tokyo Game Show. Those attending will find it at the SEGA/ATLUS booth, tucked inside the dedicated Sega Partners Corner, according to Notebookcheck. It is the first opportunity anyone will have to actually feel how the new game controls and whether the chainsaw hack-and-slash feel of the original has carried across to new hardware.
For those who have not played the 2012 game, a brief explanation is probably warranted. Lollipop Chainsaw follows Juliet, a cheerleader armed with a chainsaw, fighting her way through waves of zombies. Her boyfriend Nick, reduced to a disembodied head, travels attached to her skirt and can be placed onto zombie bodies in certain gameplay sections. It is exactly as absurd as that sounds, and that absurdity is precisely why people love it. The humour sits firmly in B-movie territory, crude and gleefully committed to its own silliness.
Whether Nick returns in Lollipop Chainsaw 2 Back2Back, and how much of that original game’s particular brand of inappropriate comedy survives into the sequel, remains unclear ahead of the Tokyo Game Show demo. The question of tone will be one of the more interesting things to emerge from those first hands-on reports.
The Long Wait Since the Original
The original Lollipop Chainsaw arrived in 2012, and aside from the Dragami Games remaster in 2024, nothing new in the series has existed since. Fourteen years is a long gap for any franchise, longer still for one with such a specific and passionate fanbase. The remaster demonstrated there was appetite for more, and now there is something concrete to point at: a named title, a confirmed platform, and a demo that will produce the first real footage and reactions within days. The PS5 release is targeted for 2027.
