The Farador electrotherapeutic device is one of the more elaborately packaged frauds to come out of the early twentieth century, a cure-all contraption that promised thermoelectric healing and delivered, quite literally, nothing. Produced from the 1910s into the 1920s, it represents a particularly well-dressed example of the quack medical device trade that flourished in that era, and it is still turning up in museum collections and on workbenches today.
What the Farador Electrotherapeutic Device Actually Claims
The pitch was straightforward, if breathtaking in its ambition: the Farador would cure all disease conditions using thermoelectric power. You bypassed the inconvenient question of whether a given treatment was appropriate (it was a cure-all, after all), took the main metal body and its connected electrodes out of their box, and followed a set of impressively complex instructions. The instructions themselves, as the Our Own Devices (actually, to put it plainly) the channel Our Own Devices covered in a recent in-depth video, formed a key part of the experience.
Unlike similar devices of the period that at least went to the trouble of running an actual electrical current through batteries or comparable hardware, the Farador purportedly relied on thermoelectric power generation. The problem is that there is no discernible hot side or cold side to what would need to be the generator for that claim to hold up. And yet, about 20 to 30 mV can be measured across the electrodes. Convincing enough, perhaps, for a customer in 1915.
Empty Inside: The Electropoise Clones
The Smithsonian Institution National Museum of American History holds a version of the Farador in its collections, and it is there that the trademark date of 1913 is recorded, pinning the device’s commercial origins to the early part of the decade. The Smithsonian’s example is not identical to every surviving unit, but the working principle, such as it is, remains consistent across variants.
That consistency has a simple explanation: the Farador is one of many devices that cloned the original Electropoise. When collectors and historians have disassembled these machines over the decades, the finding has been the same every time. They are empty inside, or at the very least entirely devoid of any functional mechanism. The thermoelectric generator does not exist. The cure-all is a shell.
What the device does have, and what its designers appear to have understood intuitively, is theatre. The more involved and complex a purported medical treatment appears, the stronger the placebo effect it tends to produce. The Farador’s elaborate instructions, its authoritative metal casing, its electrodes and its scientific-sounding thermoelectric claim all work together to create that illusion. In that sense, the complexity is not incidental to the product. It may well be the product.
The placebo effect is not a trivial thing to invoke, either. It remains a confounding factor in genuine medical trials to this day, and researchers take considerable care to account for it. Devices and treatments that look and feel more elaborate tend to produce stronger placebo responses, which is precisely why something like the Farador, with its serious presentation and multi-step ritual, could generate real subjective relief in some users while containing absolutely no active mechanism whatsoever.
Quack electrotherapeutic devices of this kind were not rare in the 1910s and 1920s. The Electropoise lineage spawned numerous imitators, and the Farador sat comfortably among them, distinguished mainly by the particular confidence of its thermoelectric claims. The Smithsonian‘s collection entry gives future researchers a firm anchor point: a trademark date of 1913, a physical object to study, and a reminder of how thoroughly the era’s medical marketplace could be exploited by a well-made box containing nothing at all.
