The Mattel Bricks original Xbox set is real, it is enormous, and it is already up for pre-order: a fully buildable 1:1 scale replica of the original Xbox console, complete with over 3,000 pieces, a buildable Duke controller, lights, sounds, and three in-console dioramas, priced at $324/£295 and shipping on 16 October 2026.
Officially revealed on Xbox‘s social platforms, the set is described as Mattel’s biggest Bricks release to date. Pre-orders are live now through Amazon, Mattel Creations, and Best Buy.
What You Actually Get in the Mattel Bricks Original Xbox Set
The centrepiece is the console itself, built to the same dimensions as the original hardware. That means it is a proper brick of a thing, which feels entirely appropriate given the subject matter. Alongside the console, you construct the Duke controller, that gloriously oversized lump of plastic that divided opinion in the early 2000s but which many of us remember with genuine affection. The action buttons on the buildable Duke are designed to look exactly like the originals, those translucent jelly-bean-coloured inputs that became so recognisable.
Press one of those four buttons and you activate one of four unique light and sound sequences, each corresponding to a different diorama tucked inside the console. The first time you open the set, it plays the original Xbox’s opening sequence through its built-in speaker, which is exactly the sort of detail that will stop you dead if that startup animation is lodged anywhere in your memory.
The three dioramas cover Halo, The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, and Psychonauts. Each slots inside the console, and each carries its own lights and sounds from the game in question. The Halo diorama even includes the Flood, a choice that suggests someone on the design team has opinions. According to Mattel Corporate, the set includes 12 NanoWorld figures spread across those dioramas, each standing one inch tall, representing iconic characters from the three games.
Part of a Broader Microsoft and Mattel Collaboration
This release does not sit in isolation. The announcement follows Mattel and Microsoft unveiling a buildable UNSC Warthog a couple of weeks earlier, and the original Xbox set lands shortly after the remaster of Halo: Combat Evolved. The pattern suggests the two companies are operating at a deeper level of collaboration now, with the original console hardware itself becoming the subject rather than just a vehicle for game-branded merchandise.
The timing carries its own weight too. Mattel Corporate frames the set as a celebration of 25 years of the Xbox console, which gives the whole project an anniversary context that makes the price point easier to square. Whether £295 feels reasonable will depend on what you already spend on shelf-worthy display pieces, but the specification list for the Mattel Bricks original Xbox set is harder to dismiss than most.
For collectors who remember the original hardware, the combination of build complexity, working electronics and game-specific dioramas puts this in different territory from a standard branded set. The console was never subtle in its dimensions and the replica apparently respects that entirely.
