Bafang Mid-Drive Sleeper E-bike Hides a Solenoid Charge Display

A Bafang mid-drive sleeper e-bike conversion built around a grandfather’s vintage road bike has turned heads in the maker community, not least because the finished machine gives almost no outward indication that it has been electrified at all. The builder, known as GRMNT, stripped back years of accumulated grime to reveal something rather special underneath: a Bianchi frame built from high-quality Tange steel, a long way from the mass-produced stovepipe-boom bicycles of the same era.

Bafang Mid-Drive Sleeper E-bike: the Conversion in Detail

The electric heart of the build is a second-hand Bafang mid-drive motor, rebuilt by GRMNT before being fitted. Mid-drive placement keeps the weight low and central, and the motor itself is notably unobtrusive once installed. What lifts this conversion above a straightforward bolt-on job is the bespoke display GRMNT engineered into the handlebars: a custom solenoid-powered electromechanical readout that shows battery charge state without any of the plastic LCD panels that betray most e-bike conversions at first glance. The actuation button for the motor is equally discreet, hidden from casual view, and the battery pack lives inside a leather case that reads as a vintage cycling accessory rather than a power source.

The result is exactly what the word «sleeper» promises: a machine that looks period-correct from across the road but pulls away with rather more enthusiasm than the Tange steel and classic geometry might suggest.

Why the Bafang Motor Is Worth a Second Look

GRMNT’s choice of motor turns out to be well-considered. According to Electrify Bike, the Bafang BBS02 is rated at 750 watts but is capable of putting out 1,470 watts peak when demanded. Torque is quoted at 120Nm, which Electrify Bike states is more than any motor currently sold in a factory-built e-bike. For a conversion sitting on a classic steel frame, that is a considerable reserve of power to call upon.

Noise is another factor worth raising. The Endless Sphere DIY EV Forum has carried detailed comparison work suggesting that Bafang mid-drive units run quieter than geared hub motors and quieter, too, than the mid-drive systems from big manufacturers including Bosch, Yamaha, and Brose. On a bike intended to pass as an ordinary vintage tourer, that kind of acoustic discretion matters as much as the clean cabling and the leather battery case.

Bafang has been developing components and complete systems for electric vehicles since 2003, which gives the company a longer engineering pedigree in this space than many of the brand names whose motors dominate the mass-market e-bike sector today. The BBS02, as a result of that accumulated development, has become something of a standard choice in the DIY conversion community precisely because it combines genuine performance with a form factor that integrates cleanly into existing frame geometries.

The Solenoid Display: Old Thinking, New Purpose

The solenoid display deserves its own moment. Where most builders reach for a commercially available LCD head unit, GRMNT instead constructed an electromechanical readout driven by solenoids and mounted cleanly into the handlebar area. It is the kind of thinking that feels at home in the world of vintage analogue instrumentation: moving parts, physical feedback, no backlit screen to shatter the aesthetic of a bicycle that is otherwise entirely convincing as a pre-electric machine.

The hand-built battery pack, housed in leather, carries the same philosophy through. Nothing about this build announces itself. The Bianchi frame, the Tange steel, the classic geometry and the clean cockpit all do the work of keeping the secret, while the rebuilt Bafang mid-drive and the 120Nm torque figure wait quietly for the rider to ask something of them.

For anyone considering a similar project, the Bafang BBS02’s combination of a 1,470-watt peak output and genuine acoustic restraint makes it one of the more capable and least conspicuous platforms available to the home converter today.
