The Mr. Nutz physical release is finally happening: Strictly Limited has partnered with Atari to bring both Mr. Nutz and its long-lost companion piece Mr. Nutz: Hoppin’ Mad back to SNES, Sega Genesis, and Sega Mega Drive cartridges, with pre-orders open now and shipping scheduled for Q1 2027.
The original Mr. Nutz arrived on SNES in 1993 and on the Sega Mega Drive in 1994, casting players as a fearless red squirrel navigating forests, caves, and assorted imaginative worlds in order to stop the villainous Mr. Blizzard from freezing the planet. It was a proper 16-bit platformer: bright, characterful, and built around exploration. Strictly Limited describes the game as offering ‘smooth controls, vibrant visuals, rewarding exploration, and countless hidden secrets,’ calling it ‘one of the most memorable platformers of its era.’ Anyone who put time into it on a real cartridge back in the day will not argue with that assessment.
Hoppin’ Mad Finally Gets Its Console Release
The more intriguing half of this announcement is Mr. Nutz: Hoppin’ Mad, and its history is worth understanding properly. According to GameRant, the game was never commercially released on Sega’s consoles in the 1990s, despite a playable port existing at the time. Publisher Ocean France released it only on Amiga. That planned Mega Drive version, which would have been titled Mr. Nutz 2, never made it to shop shelves.
What that means in practice is that this new physical release from Strictly Limited represents the first time most players will be able to run Hoppin’ Mad on Genesis or Mega Drive hardware at all, let alone from an official cartridge. The game sees Mr. Nutz battling an invasion of Alien Chickens across expansive levels connected by an explorable overworld. Strictly Limited characterises it as offering ‘a unique approach to platforming, colorful environments, and emphasis on exploration,’ and describes it as ‘a fresh adventure starring the iconic squirrel.’ Given that the original Amiga release remained relatively obscure, this is a genuine second chance for a game that slipped through the cracks of 16-bit history.
Pricing, Formats and the Mr. Nutz Physical Release Details
Both titles are compatible with original SNES, Genesis, and Mega Drive hardware, which is exactly as it should be. They come complete with manuals, which in this era of label-only re-releases is not something to take for granted. Pricing is listed as €49.99 / £44 / $59.99 per version, covering the relevant console variants. It is worth noting, however, that according to CBR, each game in the duology is sold separately, so collectors wanting both titles across multiple formats will need to budget accordingly.
Pre-orders are available now through Strictly Limited‘s official website. Physical shipping and the official release are scheduled for Q1 2027, which means there is a reasonable wait ahead, but for a proper boxed cartridge release on original hardware that is not unusual territory.
Where the Series Has Been
The last Mr. Nutz release before this announcement was on Game Boy Advance in 2003, meaning the franchise had been dormant for well over two decades. That Game Boy Advance outing was received warmly at the time, which suggests there has always been an audience for the character even if the publishing landscape did not sustain another entry.
This announcement had been anticipated by some in the community as a possible candidate for the ‘biggest announcements we’ve ever made’ that Atari recently teased publicly. That larger announcement, whatever it turns out to be, remains pending. The Mr. Nutz partnership with Strictly Limited appears to be a separate initiative running alongside it.
For collectors with a working SNES or Mega Drive sat on a shelf, and a particular fondness for the squirrel-based platforming genre, Q1 2027 is now a date worth circling.
